When you hear from pet owners who give cannabis to their animals, they are referring to CBD (cannabidiol) in an almost positive way. It is important not to give animals any products containing THC without consulting a professional. Dogs in particular have significantly more cannabinoid receptors in their brain, making them extremely vulnerable to the psychoactive and negative effects of THC.

The beneficial effects of CBD are known for treating seizures, pain, mood, and more, but many are still surprised to learn that it can benefit their pets too.

A survey on the Veterinary Information Network found that 80 percent of veterinarians who use CBD in clinical trials said it was helpful for chronic pain. 65 percent said it was helpful for anxiety. Over 80 percent of vets said there were no reports of side effects other than sleepiness in the cat or dog. As the owner of a fearful rescue dog, her CBD treats are essential for long trips or approaching situations that trigger her anxiety.

In addition, says Stephanie McGrath DVM, neurologist at Colorado State University, “We saw a link between the levels of CBD in these dogs and the reduction in seizures.” The results are encouraging, and they hope that CBD will be an alternative in the future will be to existing anticonvulsants.

In the past few years, pet parents have seen the difference CBD oil makes in their pets for a variety of different problems.

anxiety

Based on human studies, we already know that CBD improves anxiety, and the same goes for your pet. If you have an anxious dog, CBD oil can help keep your dog calm.

arthritis

CBD helps with the inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. Larger and older dogs are particularly prone to arthritis, but cats can also be affected.

cancer

CBD can help with chemotherapy-related nausea and is a great addition to a pain management plan. CBD has also reduced the size of some pet tumors.

Seizures

CBD products have helped reduce the number of seizures your pet could have. 89 percent of dogs and cats who use CBD oil have fewer seizures than those who don’t.

Skin diseases

Some animals suffer from rashes and yeast that make them itchy and scratching them will only make it worse. Allergies or bacteria cause some of this. This penetrates their fur and causes all kinds of skin diseases. CBD can help repair this layer and they will feel much better.
