How moms are breaking the stigma surrounding cannabis

As research and social stigma surrounding cannabis is rapidly changing, women and mothers are a surprising force behind this change.

Social media is full of “wine mom” and memes about “wine clock” and the like, but the reality is many trade wine for a joint or a jelly bean to unwind and get some peace of mind at the end of the day. We talk a lot about progress, but when we mention we go home to get high after the kids go to bed, we get judgmental looks—why?

Moms who use cannabis are not bad moms!

I’ll be honest – I’m an anxious person, a chronic overthinker and a mother of two boys. I find CBD helps me relax enough to function in my daily routines. Looking at the undeniable medicinal benefits of cannabis, we examine the perspective of four Ontario moms who love cannabis.

Eva from Etobicoke, Ontario:

“It’s hard to find time for yourself. If you’re in nursing school, you’ll work part-time in a retirement home, volunteer work, and mothering duties. Smoking cannabis helps me get rid of the heat. I become more relaxed, and my fear [is] reduced.”

“When I interact with my 6-year-old daughter, I’m more artistic and playing with Barbie dolls is more fun.”

Shannon from Innisfil, Ontario:

“I suffer from insomnia and anxiety which has increased since Covid. I like to use cannabis at night to relax and sleep. It helps me turn my brain off. A restless night is neither mentally nor physically good. I feel that if I don’t sleep, it’s hard to fulfill my maternal responsibilities, which isn’t fair to my son. So cannabis helps me with my daily tasks.”

Christa from Barrie, Ontario:

“I suffer from fibromyalgia and [took] many painkillers over the years which left me feeling distant and too lazy to do anything. After switching to cannabis, gum, vaping, and pills, I can clean the house, make dinner, be occupied with the kids, and sleep better at night. Cannabis has changed my life for the better.”

Louise from Toronto, Ontario:

“I used to smoke joints and use bongs, but shortly after becoming a mother I switched to vaping indica strains. I found this better because it gives me a milder mental high, which works well as a marketing director and single mom. When I smoke joints and bongs, I found I had a lingering weed smell on me and felt uncomfortable around my adult children who love close affection.”

“I mainly use cannabis as a mood enhancer. It helps me relax at night and digest the events of the day, making me feel calmer. I’m not one to use cannabis a lot during the day, but occasionally when I do it helps me get out of my bad mood or negative thinking. I become more concentrated and I can do housework happily. It helps me to be a more pleasant person and mother. I am spending more time with my girls and teaching them life skills with patience.”

It’s like a broken record – We keep hearing how cannabis helps moms sleep better, feel relaxed and manage their pain and anxiety. It’s high time to end the stigma against mothers who use cannabis because canna moms are here to stay.
