FDA and CDC are issuing warnings about Delta-8 THC products

If you’ve used Delta-8 THC, the American Food and Drug Administration and Center for Disease Control and Prevention have issued a high level warning against it. The public is urged to stop using Delta-8 THC products as it poses health risks.

The FDA issued the warning in a recent update on 5 Things to Know About Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol – Delta-8 THC. The seriousness of the notice was written in bold letters that “DELTA-8 THC HAS SERIOUS HEALTH RISKS” to discourage people from continuing with any of these products. The DEA has also previously issued warnings about Delta-8 THC.

A breakdown of the warning

The FDA and CDC warn against:

The CDC claims that cannabis refers to any part of Cannabis Sativa THC, such as flowers, extracts, seeds with over 0.3% delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) by dry weight. The parts of the marijuana plant that contain 0.3% or less THC by dry weight are considered “hemp,” which was legalized during the 2018 Farm Bill.

Marijuana plants contain more than 100 cannabinoids with psychoactive THC (which could be mind altering) and lead to a high. CBD is also an active cannabinoid in the cannabis plant that is not psychoactive and does not induce a high.

THC refers to delta-9-THC, while delta-8-THC thrives naturally in minimal amounts in the marijuana plant and, like delta-9-THC, is said to be up to 50-75% psychoactive. But CBD can be unnaturally converted to delta-8 THC through a chemical process.

The FDA claims that after the chemical changes, the resulting Delta-8-THC product may contain potentially harmful by-products due to the chemicals used during the process. The FDA also claims that there are some concerns about other likely contaminants that could be produced, but this depends on the composition of the starting raw materials. If these products are inhaled or consumed, the chemicals can harm the body.

The proliferation of Delta-8 THC products and the need for caution

The Delta-8 THC products are gradually increasing the hemp and cannabis market. The products are sometimes advertised as “weed light” to mislead potential buyers, or as “diet weed” to cover up the dangers. A wide variety of Delta-8 THC fortified products are available in the markets and intersect with products such as:

  • Vapes

  • Tobacco products

  • Tinctures

  • gummy bear

  • chocolates

  • Infused beverages

The CDC has announced that the health effects of Delta-8 THC have not been fully researched and are still not well understood. But Delta-8 THC is a psychoactive substance with relative risks of impairment like Delta-9 THC. Therefore, such products with Delta-8-THC are often labeled with only Delta-9-THC content instead of the entire THC substance, which underestimates the psychoactive prospects of the products for customers.

Additionally, Delta-8 THC products are sold by several companies that have hemp for sale and can be confused with CBD products and hemp, which are non-intoxicating. Consumers using these products will experience unexpected or increased levels of THC poisoning.

FDA has not rated or approved Delta-8 THC products

To date, the FDA has not yet rated or approved Delta-8-THC products for harmless use. Some of the agency’s concerns include unpredictability in product formulation and product classification, as well as other cannabinoid and terpene levels with adjustable delta-8 THC levels.

Some of the products may be labeled as “hemp products”, which is very misleading for the consumer who views hemp as a non-psychoactive substance. The FDA has raised concerns about how products containing Delta-8-THC are being promoted as medical and therapeutic solutions for certain health problems.

But when the FDA doesn’t approve something for consumption, it makes it illegal to sell. Selling such unapproved drugs is against federal law and puts customers at risk. The products are not considered safe to use and that is the reason the FDA is warning.

Reports of adverse events sent to the CDC and FDC with Delta-8 THC products

Did you know that from December 2020 through July 2021, the FDA received infringing accounts from consumers and law enforcement agencies? The FDA also announced that 22 patients who consumed Delta-8 THC products were negatively affected:

  • Fourteen patients came to the hospital for treatment of ingestion after using the Delta-8 THC fortified products.
  • 19 patients also experienced the effects of the negative effects of consuming delta-8 THC foods like brownies or gummies.

Most of them had problems standing for long periods of time, hallucinations, vomiting, and fainting spells. The FDA has reported that the national control centers received a total of 661 delta-8 THC exposure cases from January 2018 to July 31, 2021. Of that number, 660 occurred between January 1 and July 31, 2021.

Of the complete 661 cases;

The CDC claims that Delta-8 poisoning can lead to side effects similar to those seen with Delta-9-THC poisoning, including:

  • coma

  • Sedation

  • Low blood pressure

  • Slurred speech

  • lethargy

  • Difficulty breathing

Bottom line

As a cannabis enthusiast, you need to stay up to date with the latest news and warnings from the FDA and CDC. You need to be up to date with everything that is happening in the industry so you can stay protected and only consume healthy weed.

Ever since the FDA and CDC warned against using hemp-derived products containing Delta-8-THC, cannabis users have begun evaluating the contents of the hemp and CBD-related products they buy. The FDA is working with other federal and state partners to address concerns related to Delta-8-THC products while also monitoring the market for additional product complaints.
