The Freak Brothers theme song was created and performed by TDE recording artist Ray Vaughn. The Freak Brothers history lesson

The brothers have evolved quite a bit since they first performed in the late 1960s. The animated series is based on the classic underground comic The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers by comic legend Gilbert Shelton.

After leaving projects like the underground East Village Other, Shelton self-published Feds ‘n’ Heads in 1968, followed by his most famous comic book, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. He also contributed a lot to Zap Comix along with fellow artist R. Crumb. Spin-off comics like Fat Freddy’s Cat and the founding of Rip Off Press followed.

In the comic, Fat Freddy is usually burned over a bunk or somehow loses his money while Phineas is the intellectual. Meanwhile, Freewheelin ‘Franklin has the most iconic quote of the three: “Dope will get you through times without money, better than money will get you through times without dope.”

Underground comics paved the way for publications like High Times when most other publications refused to make references to cannabis and psychedelic drugs. Comic book publishers have pushed the boundaries of implementing cannabis and other adult topics.

The comic book Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers eventually sold over 45 million copies in 16 languages and was hailed as “One of the 100 greatest comics of the century” by the Comics Journal.

The Freak Brothers revival is testament to the enduring power of comics in pop culture.
