Connecticut’s first legal weed stores will open next week

Here’s the latest on where to buy cannabis in Connecticut on day one of adult sales and beyond.

Next Tuesday, January 10th, Connecticut’s first legal weed shops will open for sale to adults. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., licensed hybrid dealers may sell cannabis products to all adults 21 and older.

The opening list of stores includes Affinity in New Haven, Bluepoint Wellness of CT in Branford, Still River Wellness in Torrington, Fine Fettle Dispensary in Newington, Stamford and Willimantic, The Botanist in Danbury and Montville, and Willow Brook Wellness in Meriden.

From consumption restrictions to upcoming license sweepstakes, here’s everything you need to know to get started on day one of adult sales in Connecticut.

Buying rules and limits for the first day

Customers require government issued ID to prove they are over 21 years of age. Expect to queue at some shops and consider calling ahead for best directions.

Sales will be capped at 1/4 ounce (seven grams) of flower per transaction when the market opens. Those transaction limits will be reviewed later this year, but they’re designed to ensure companies can meet demand for both adult consumers and medical marijuana patients with legal supply. Under the law, patients in Connecticut’s medical marijuana program are allowed to purchase up to five ounces per month.

Different types and sizes of products can be purchased together up to a total limit of 1/4 ounce of cannabis flower or its equivalent in milligrams of THC per transaction.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has stated that products will be subject to these restrictions:

  • Up to seven pre-rolled cigarettes at 1 gram each, or 14 pre-rolled cigarettes at 0.5 grams each. Or any combination of up to seven total grams, which equals 1/4 ounce.
  • Two to four vape cartridges that come in 0.5ml and 1ml sizes.
  • Edibles vary in type and size. A standard sized brownie or cookie can equal 0.08 grams of cannabis flowers. An edible portion must contain no more than five milligrams of THC.
  • A combination of different product types that together make up no more than ΒΌ ounce.

Similar to New Jersey, the first stores in Connecticut will be existing medical pharmacies licensed through a “hybrid license” for adult sales.

These nine stores have been notified that they have successfully completed the necessary steps to convert to a hybrid license and can begin selling cannabis products to all adults 21 and over, beginning no earlier than 10:00 a.m. on January 10.

  • Affinity (New Haven)
  • Bluepoint Wellness of Connecticut (Branford)
  • Still River Wellness (Torrington)
  • Dispensary for Fine Fettle (Newington)
  • Feinfettle Pharmacy (Stamford)
  • Pharmacy for Feinfettle (Willimantic)
  • The Botanist (Danbury)
  • The Botanist (Montville)
  • Willow Brook Wellness (Meriden)

Anticipating long lines and heavy traffic, the Department of Consumer Protection is recommending that medical customers stock up on essentials before the doors open for adult sales at 10am on Tuesday.

More retailers are on the way

Beginning February 3rd, Connecticut will then open the application process for additional adult use retailers through May 3rd. The following applications will also be available on February 3rd.

  • Lottery Applications for Adult Cannabis Retailers
  • Applications without lottery for cultivators located in a Disproportionately Affected Area (DIA).
  • Equity Joint Ventures
  • Non-lottery requests to convert from medical marijuana producer to enhanced producer
  • Non-lottery applications to convert from a medical marijuana dispensary to a hybrid distributor

All lottery application periods are open for three months. There is no cut-off date for conversion applications or equity joint ventures.

Connecticut cannabis license application deadlines come one month after day one of regulated adult sales. The remaining 90-day lottery application periods will begin on the following schedule:

  • Microcultivator: February 10, 2022
  • Delivery service: February 17, 2022
  • Hybrid dealers: February 24, 2022
  • Food and Beverage: March 3, 2022
  • Product manufacturer: March 10, 2022
  • Product Packer: March 17, 2022
  • Carrier: March 24, 2022

The country’s cannabis department plans to open a second lottery application period for most license types in the second half of 2022. Applicants who apply in the first lottery round and are not selected but still wish to participate in future lotteries must re-apply and pay the lottery fee on subsequent lottery opportunities.

The consumption laws will not change

There are still rules specifying where people can consume cannabis. Some cities and towns have their own specific regulations, but at the state level, smoking weed is prohibited in state parks, on beaches, and anywhere tobacco smoking or vaping is prohibited.
