1943 Bronze Lincoln Wheat Penny

In 1943 the US government tried to save copper so that it could be used to make ammunition. So they began minting pennies with steel blanks and went on to print millions of them. If you’ve got a steel wheat penny, it’s worth holding on to; Just don’t expect it to pay for your retirement. You want a bronze for that. A handful of bronze slugs accidentally ended up in the coin and eventually became wheat pennies. Considered to be quite rare, the bronze Lincoln Wheat pennies are one of the most coveted American coins.

1982 No Mintmark Roosevelt Dime

In 1982, the Philadelphia Mint accidentally produced over ten thousand dimes without their mint mark. If you have a 1982 Roosevelt cent, look for a small capital ā€œPā€ above the date. If it’s not there, it’s your lucky day!

If you have a 2004 Wisconsin State Quarter, look for an extra leaf at the bottom of the cob. On some coins the leaf is printed high, on others it is low; Both versions of the additional leaf bug coin are valuable and have been circulated by the thousands.

2005-P “In God We Rust” Kansas State Quarter

An obvious flaw that can be seen with the naked eye, these coins have great collector value. Five thousand have been discovered in circulation, but it is likely that many more exist.

error coins

When it comes to collectible value, error coins are best. Thousands of coins are minted at the same time and a lot can go wrong. If the error is obvious and easy to spot, the value of the coin will increase. However, this is not always the case. Many valuable coin flaws are difficult to spot without a magnifying glass. Look out for these types of errors:

  • misalignment
  • double punch ā€“ often looks like bubble writing and can only affect a small part of the coin.
  • metal content errors ā€“ usually determined with a gram scale or a magnet
