Homemade edibles don’t have to be complicated or nerve-wracking. In fact, making DIY infusions can save money and allow home cooks to tweak flavors, sugar levels, and THC potency to their heart’s content.

What you will need:

  • thermometer
  • Candy molds (each type: lollipop, pot leaf, adult-only molds)
  • pastry brush
  • lollipop stick
  • coloring
  • Aroma

thermometer

A thermometer is a must to successfully prepare this recipe or any other candy. When choosing a thermometer for cooking you have several choices including: glass, digital and glass/metal hybrid.

glass thermometer (recommended)

Glass fry/candy thermometers are designed for candy making. Made entirely of glass, they hook into the side of each pot to monitor the temperature.

If you are using a flat-sided saucepan, the tip of the thermometer can be dipped directly into the cooking mixture. Do not Let the tip touch the bottom of the pot. They are incredibly delicate and break easily.

Also, remember to let glass thermometers cool completely before submerging them in water (I’ve broken my fair share by learning the hard way).

metal and glass thermometers

Metal and glass candy thermometers are a more durable option. They hook onto the side of the pot with the tip submerged in the cooking liquid.

The metal rim lists the different temperature levels when cooking candies. These thermometers are safe and easy to use.

Digital thermometers

Another option is digital thermometers with removable temperature probes. They are inexpensive and versatile in the kitchen. The probe is fixed with a heat-resistant wire. For the most accurate temperature reading, stick the probe into the mixture but don’t touch the bottom.

Candy molds (optional)

Technically, you could make this recipe without a mold, but we highly recommend one if you’re working with hot liquid sugar.

You can choose any shape that excites you, but make sure to go with the silicone molds instead of cheap plastic ones. You don’t want melted plastic in your pot.

If you want to skip the shapes, buy a box of parchment paper. With a spoon, you can make delicate artisan weed lollipops using only parchment.

pastry brush

We use a pastry brush to rinse the inside of the pot while we cook the sugar. They can be available in silicone or natural bristle brushes. Pastry brushes can be purchased for a few dollars at any store that sells kitchen supplies. After that, they are ideal for applying BBQ sauce when grilling.

lollipop stick

Lollipop sticks are available in the candy section of any craft store. Most dollar stores and Walmart now carry a wide variety of candy making supplies.

Flavor additives (optional)

You can find a variety of flavors at the grocery store, bulk barn, or any center with a baking department. It’s cool if you want weed-flavored suckers, but a kick of mint or citrus really makes it even better.

Pro tip: Be careful when adding flavor to the hot sugar mixture. Most flavors produce a hot burst of steam when added.

food coloring (optional)

Food coloring has come a long way since those four packs of red, green, blue, and yellow squeeze bottles. These color sets are available at the grocery store, but we recommend gel food coloring for more color variety.

If you’re using gel food coloring, it’s a good idea to have a couple of butter knives on hand. Use them to dip in the food coloring, then we swirl the utensil through the hot candy mixture. Use a fresh knife each time you want to add color.

Ingredients:

Pro tip: Gather all the ingredients and tools before you begin. Boiling sugar to make candy is a hot, gooey process. Oven mitts are a smart safety precaution to have on hand.

  • 1-3 tsp cannabis butter or oil infusion (adjust for tolerance)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup of water
  • ½ cup light corn syrup
  • 1½ tsp flavor
  • 2-3 drops of food coloring (optional)

This recipe makes 16 servings and requires 15 minutes prep plus 30 minutes cook time for a total time of 45 minutes.

Important: For candy like weed lollipops or other candy, the mix must reach 300°Q. In candy making, this is the “hard crack” stage, which ensures the mixture sets properly into a hard candy.

  1. First, lightly spray the silicone mold onto the surface with non-stick spray. Wipe gently with a paper towel to remove most of the surface oil. Add the lollipop sticks and set aside.
  2. Combine sugar, corn syrup, and water in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir gently until the sugar has dissolved. Once the sugar has dissolved, stop stirring the mixture.
  3. Using a damp pastry brush, wipe the inside of the pot to remove any traces of sugar. Clip a thermometer to the rim of the pot or stick the probe into the mixture. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Watch the temperature closely, we want to remove the pot from the heat as soon as it reaches 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Place the pot on a heat-resistant surface. If using gel food coloring, dip a toothpick in the coloring and swish it through the hot liquid candy. For liquid coloring, add a few drops and stir to distribute the color.
  6. Next, it’s time for the weed! Add the cannabis oil and aroma, if using, and stir quickly to combine. (Remember to keep your face away from the pot when adding the flavoring as it may produce a hot burst of steam).
  7. Once all of your ingredients are combined, gently pour the hot liquid candy into the mold or onto parchment paper. Place a lollipop stick in the center, making sure it is completely covered with the candy. Let the lollipops cool completely or it will become a gooey mess.

Store your weed candies in a dry place. Moisture will cause the lollipops to become sticky. And above all have fun! This is cannabis, after all.
