Bulk Buys: These brands have the best ounces of weed

I firmly believe that the best weed comes in a big ol’ bag. Save your high-value eighths, your pre-roll packs, your precious, exorbitant grams—for me, it’s all about the ounce deal.

An ounce on the shelf feels comforting, whether that’s for filling the grinder to the brim, rolling a few extra joints to share at get-togethers, or just getting really good at a particular strain, in a variety of settings .

Ounce bags were relatively rare in the early days of legal rec cannabis. But as the market has matured and manufacturers increasingly target more sophisticated consumers, ounce pouches continue to fill Canada’s pharmacy shelves.

So it’s high time we took a look at what ounce deals Canadian brands are offering and what to look for next time you shop.

Retailer recommendation: Pink Cookies by Big Bag O’ Buds

Bud on bud, on bud. (Big Bag O’ Buds)

Brand: Big Bag O’ Buds

Licensed producer: organization chart

THC: 18-26% CBD: 0-1.5%

For value for money and a decent smoke quality, one of the best options on the market today is an ounce-sized bag of Pink Cookies. The exact strain rotates in these no-frills silver pouches, so check the label each time to see what you’re getting. The Big Bag O’ Buds flower is grown by Organigram in New Brunswick.

As the name suggests, Pink Cookies comes from the Girl Scout Cookies family crossed with Cherry Pie. As for terpenes, this strain exudes some of the spicier, hoppy terpenes: caryophyllene, humulene, limonene, and myrcene. The buds produce a slightly minty flavor on the inhale and a musky, gassy flavor on the exhale.

Reviewers have given her a thumbs up for having firm, dense buds, a nice cut, and a fresh smell as soon as you open the bag. The price isn’t bad either – most people have paid around $140 for a bag (although it’s currently $125 out here in the Maritimes).

Budget Selection: Good Supply Dealer Selection

(good supply)

Brand: Good supply

Licensed producer: Tilray

THC: 17-23% CBD: 0-3%

Finding a decent sub-$100 budget in the Canadian market often becomes a guessing game.

This $99 Dealer’s Pick range from Good Supply comes in both indica and sativa varieties, and strains vary by harvest. The most recent batches of their indica featured a version of the Frost Monster strain (a cross between Northern Lights and White Widow) that contains around 20% THC.

Dealer’s Pick’s current sativa offering is Green Cush, a cross between Green Crack and Purple Kush, has a slightly milder THC level of 18%, and contains beta-caryophyllene, myrcene, and limonene to induce a peppery, earthy flavor.

In reviews from both, users note a quality cut to decent sized buds, as well as great flavors and smells. And at $99 (and sometimes less, depending on the store), it’s about as trustworthy a choice as you’ll find at the budget end of the market.

Premium Choice: BC Organic White RNTZ by Simply Bare

(just naked)

Brand: Just naked

Licensed Producer: Rubicon Organics

THC: 22-29% CBD: 0-0.1%

If you prefer a premium option and have the budget for it, Simply Bare’s BC Organic White RNTZ is one of the top rated ounces on the Canadian market today.

This all-organic, BC-based manufacturer has a number of brands that consumers love (including Supplied by 1964 and Homestead), but its offerings under the Simply Bare brand take the top spot for premium ounces.

Her White RNTZ is a hybrid flower, a rare Runtz phenotype from Zkittlez and Gelato genetics, that was awarded Leafly’s Strain of the Year 2020 with a limonene-dominant terpene profile. Rubicon grows its product in living soil in ideal greenhouse conditions and cold cures for a full 14 days.

The price is a bit higher – expect to pay upwards of $200 depending on the retailer – but it’s definitely worth it.

Locally Owned Pick: Island Sugar Her Friend: is Otsis Pick

(Sev7n Sheet)

Brand: sev7n
Licensed manufacturer: Seven Leaf
THC: 22-28% CBD: 0-1%

With Canadian cannabis, as with any other industry, we must support independent brands and indigenously owned producers. Luckily, Sev7n makes that easy with the ounce-sized Island Sugar Kawehno:ke Otsi kheta, made by Seven Leaf, based in Akwesasne Mohawk Territory in eastern Ontario.

Their strain, Island Sugar, is a hybrid strain with fairly high THC levels and a terpene profile that brings together humulene, beta-caryophyllene, and limonene for a tangy, tropical flavor with tart tangerine overtones.

High CBD recommendation: Mango Haze by Color Cannabis

(color cannabis)

Brand: coloring cannabis

Licensed Manufacturer: Entourage Brands

THC: 4-10% CBD: 6-14%

It can be difficult to find a more THC to CBD balanced strain, especially in one ounce. But Color Cannabis has brought forth an iteration of Mango Haze with this 2:1 CBD to THC high CBD strain that balances the benefits of CBD with euphoria and flavor.

This mild sativa crosses traditional Mango Haze genetics with a high-CBD strain to produce a unique CBD-forward iteration. Usually everything in the Haze family expresses sweet and lemony aromas. But for this strain’s terpene profile, we see a spicier palette with beta-caryophyllene, cymene, pinene, and farnesene.

Baker’s Choice: All Purpose Flower by Bake Sale

Get baked while you bake to get baked more. (cake sale)

Brand: bake sale

Licensed producer: hexo

THC: 14-17% CBD: 0-1%

Believe it or not, ounces are not always bought for smoking or vaping. Ounces are great for cooking, and Bake Sale is designed with home cooks and aspiring bakers in mind.

This budget-friendly option features indica and sativa strains that have been developed for use in homemade cannabutter and other recipes. When Hexo launched the Bake Sale brand, they specifically aimed at bakers and chefs, calling it “the number one ingredient for cannabis connoisseurs to unleash their inner chef.”

Her THC levels tend to be a bit more forgiving, ranging from 14% to 17%. Online reviews say it’s a reasonable ounce to smoke, but both the indica and sativa strains are fantastic offerings if you’re looking to bake a tray of brownies or experiment in the kitchen.
